What Is Alt Text and How Does It Impact Search Rankings?

SEO and website accessibility are more crucial than ever in the digital age. The ways that websites convey their content to users and search engines change along with them. Alt text is a vital but frequently disregarded aspect of web optimization. The purpose of alt text, which is short for alternative text, is to improve accessibility by adding a description to images on a webpage. However, did you know that it also has a big impact on the search engine rankings of your website? We’ll go into great detail about alt text in this post, including what it is, why it matters, and how it affects search engine rankings.

    Alt Text: What Is It?

A brief textual description that is added to an image on a webpage and usually appears inside the HTML image tag is called alt text. Its main purpose is to explain an image’s content to screen reader users or those who are blind or visually impaired. To put it simply, alt text gives people who are unable to see the image itself an alternative so they can still comprehend the context it offers. For instance, the alt text might read, “A playful puppy chasing a ball on the grass,” rather than simply showing an image of a puppy. The objective is to provide a succinct but detailed substitute that communicates the image’s context and meaning. Although alt text was initially intended to increase accessibility, it has since developed into a crucial component of SEO tactics. Although search engines like Google are unable to “see” images, they can read the alt text, which helps them decipher the image’s content.

The Function of Alt Text in SEO

Alt text has a big influence on search engine optimization in addition to its accessibility advantages. Although algorithms are used by search engines like Google to rank pages, these algorithms require signals in order to comprehend the content of a webpage. One of the most useful signals they have is text. Search engines rely on alt text to determine what an image represents because they are not as good at interpreting images as humans are. You have a better chance of appearing higher in search engine results when you use alt text that is descriptive, packed with keywords, and created by a versatile alt text generator that will help you with your results. For instance, if you run a pet shop and your website has a picture of a dog toy, you could use keywords like “best chew toys for puppies” in the alt text.

    Accessibility and Alt Text

The function of alt text in web accessibility is its most important feature. The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) state that all non-text content, including images, on websites must have alternative text. People with visual impairments use screen readers, which read aloud the alt text to help them comprehend the images’ content. These users are left in the dark and unable to access crucial visual information in the absence of alt text. Additionally, alt text is helpful when images don’t load. In these situations, the alt text will take the image’s place so that users can still comprehend the content’s context. By making your website more inclusive and enhancing the user experience overall, this easy-to-use yet powerful solution can help you reach a larger audience.

The Best Ways to Write Alt Text

It’s crucial to adhere to a few best practices to maximize alt text. First, be brief but detailed.  Without being overly wordy, alt text should accurately describe the image. Aim for conciseness and clarity while still including enough information to support the image’s intended use. After that, make good use of keywords. When appropriate, include pertinent keywords, but refrain from stuffing it full. Make sure your description makes sense to search engines and users dislyte. Also, steer clear of redundancy. You don’t need to reiterate the context of the image in the alt text if it is already evident from the text on the page. Instead, fill in the blanks with information that will help users and search engines understand the image completely.

Optimizing every element of your website, including alt text, is essential to standing out in the crowded online space as digital content becomes more competitive. To benefit both users and search engines, make sure to devote time to creating meaningful alt text for your images.
