Cost Comparison: Home EV Charger vs. Public Charging Station

If you drive an electric vehicle frequently, would you use a public EV charging station or install a residential EV charger? Now that home EVs are becoming commonplace, it’s a question worth pondering. In this article, we’ll dive into the costs of using a home EV charger versus a public EV charger to help you make a better decision.

What is a public charging station?

When your electric car runs out of juice, you look for a nearby charging station. These charging stations, which provide charging services to all EV drivers, are public EV charging stations. They are usually located in public places, such as car parks and business districts, and have a convenient payment system (most charging stations require users to pay a fee).

Public charging stations are convenient for EV owners without a home charging solution. Public EV charging stations are usually equipped with different charging sockets to accommodate the various EV charging standards, such as CHAdeMO, CCS, and Type 2. This allows public EV charging stations to provide convenient charging services for EV drivers in shopping centers, restaurants, etc.

Public EV charging stations are typically Level 2 and 3 commercial EV charging stations. Level 2 commercial EV chargers usually range from 7 kW to 22 kW and charge faster than level 1 EV chargers (basic EV chargers). Because they use Direct current (DC) power, level 3 EV chargers are known as DC fast chargers.

7 Factors Affecting the Cost of Charging an EV at Home

The cost of charging an electric car at home is affected by many factors. Here is my list of 7 factors that affect the price of charging an electric car at home:

Residential electricity price: residential electricity price is a crucial factor affecting EV charging costs. Different regions and power companies may charge different rates for electricity. Some areas may also have time-of-day tariffs to encourage people to use electricity during off-peak hours, making it more economical for EV drivers to charge during off-peak hours.

Where you live: The cost of home charging is also affected by where you live. Some locations may require electrical infrastructure upgrades to meet the high power demands of EV charging equipment. However, upgrading the electrical system may increase the cost of installing a home EV charger.

Types of charging equipment: Residential EV chargers come in various power levels and features and, therefore, vary in price. Purchasing a smart home EV charger with plug-and-charge, appointment charging, and dynamic load balancing features is more expensive than a basic version of an EV charger. In addition to software and hardware features, the charging power directly impacts an EV charger’s price. A 180kW DC EV charger will complete the charging task faster than a 30kW DC charger, but accordingly, they cost more.

Brand of charging equipment: Different brands of EV charging equipment have different prices in the market. Well-known EV charger providers usually invest more resources in developing advanced technologies to ensure their products meet high-quality standards, hence higher prices. In addition, the market positioning of the EV charger manufacturer also plays a vital role in the pricing strategy. Some EV charger companies may specialize in the high-end market, while others are more focused on the mid-range and low-end markets, directly affecting the final selling price of the charger.

Charging Frequency: Home charging costs are also affected by charging frequency. Charging frequency is related to EV use and the number of EVs. Households that use their EVs daily and those with multiple EVs tend to have higher electricity bills.

EV Model: Different EV models have different battery capacities and charging speeds. EVs with larger batteries require more electricity to recharge.

Government Incentives and Subsidies: Many regions promote the EV industry’s growth locally and offer incentives or subsidies to people to encourage households to install EV charging equipment. These incentives can reduce the cost of home charging.

Five factors that affect the cost of public charging

Rates: Public charging stations often have different pricing models, from pay-as-you-go to subscription-based services. Rates may also depend on the charging station’s location, the charger’s speed, and the charging network provider. Some charging stations may use hourly billing, while others use per-charge speed or usage billing.

Charging hours: as with residential tariffs, some regions and utilities have time-of-use tariff systems. Some public charging stations will introduce off-peak tariffs to motivate vehicle owners to charge during low-peak hours, reducing the pressure on electricity consumption during peak hours.

Business model of the charging service provider: The business model will also impact the cost of charging. Different charging service providers may have other business models. Some providers may use memberships, offering lower member rates and charging higher fees to non-members. However, there may be more cost-effective solutions for drivers occasionally using public charging stations.

EV Charger Type: Charging stations typically offer different charging types, such as fast charging alternating (AC) and direct (DC). DC fast EV chargers charge faster than AC commercial EV chargers but can be relatively expensive.

Frequency of Use: Frequent use of public charging stations can lead to higher charging costs. As with residential charging, frequent charging can increase drivers’ charging costs.

    Conclusion

A home EV charger or a public EV charging station depends on individual needs and preferences. Home charging solutions are more economical for frequent EV drivers, while public charging stations may be considered for emergencies requiring fast charging. Therefore, drivers should consider many factors, such as their charging needs, frequency, and budget, to choose the best charging solution. If you want to know more. You can click here.
